Six people were killed and other 50 injured in a blast at a market in the city of Juliaca in southern Peru. The reason behind the blast is still unknown.
The Andean city of Juliaca is about 830km (520 miles) south of the capital, Lima. A backpack full of dynamite exploded in the crowded market. Some 1000 people had gathered at the place to celebrate the 40-year anniversary of the opening of the market.
One official put it down to the fireworks intended for the celebrations but another said terrorism could not be ruled out. Police are trying to determine whether the blast was an attack or an accident.
What the police have to determine is the motive, the aim and what kind of criminal did it,
Police Col Romeo Delgado told the Associated Press news agency.
This week marks the 27th anniversary of the foundation of Shining Path, the Maoist rebel group that plunged Peru into violence during the 1980s and 1990s.
Although the militant group has been largely defeated, it still carries out occasional guerrilla attacks. Abimael Guzman, its leader, was detained in 1992 and is currently serving a life sentence in prison.
