British Home Secretary Charles Clarke has defended plans to hold terror suspects for up to 90 days without charge. He said that it was important to hold people “absolutely determined to engage in terrorist acts”. He added he could not “think of a situation in the world” where terror was justified for political change.

The British government wants to extend the maximum period a suspect can be held without charge from 14 to 90 days. Human rights activists are clamouring that such a legislation could fall foul of human rights for which a liberal society such as British was committed.
