London survived another potential carnage after the British police foiled the bid for a twin car bomb attacks that could have claimed hundreds of Londoners in the theatre district. Police is suspecting al-Qaeda links behind the attempt.

It was a close shave for the Londoners and British police did a smart job by quickly diffusing bombs planted in two Mercedes sedans.

It was purely accidental that Police discovered the first car. An ambulance crew saw smokes coming out from a dull green Mercedes near the Piccadilly Circus and informed police. Subsequently a mobile phone, which was to function as the trigger, was found inside the car and was readily diffused.

The second car was also a Mercedes, which the parking authorities had docked in a Hyde Park garage. After the news of the first car bomb broke, workers smelt gasoline from the car and police was informed.

The attack bid sent alarm even to New York where security was beefed up at Times Square and the US government is in touch with its British counterpart.
