These days everyone hates religions except the Muslims. Ironically, one takes pride in mauling ones’ faith to death and then blaming Islamic fundamentalists for doing the job. Of course, criticism of the Roman Catholic Church is fashionable and goes a long way in establishing an author as one of the Moderns. A Grayling in an article in the UK Guardian mixes truth with lies. He has problems with everything Catholic. Mind you, the Church does not ask for his beheading in a fatwa even after he nearly punches her to death. His pet peeve is with the Church and Spain. First he does not understand why so many have been recently beatified in Spain. Then he has a problem with the Church protesting such reformist leaders as Spain’s Prime Minister Jose Luis Zapatero. To top all these present grouses he find fault with history. The Catholic Church is held responsible for messing up traditionally Catholic countries like Brazil and Ireland. He blames the Church for clamping down on ‘liberation theology’. But he forgets to mention a few truths. Prominent liberation theologians are teaching at Papal Colleges in Rome, liberation theology is taught in seminaries throughout the world. Instead of spoiling European history, the Church saved the world from the scourge of oppressive Marxism. She is not fighting Spain’s prime minister but rather some of his policies, which will catapult Spain into social and spiritual turmoil. But Mr. Grayling does not believe in anything spiritual for he thinks we are automata without souls, being soulless himself. To set examples of newer and higher spiritual standards the Church has beatified so many in Spain. It is as straightforward as that. The reformist zeal of the Spanish PM is understandable. He wants to make Spain a leader amongst European nations. He wants to thus legalize abortion, make same-sex marriages valid and wants to lessen Church-state ties. The first two are taboo in the Church in the same manner as drinking is taboo in Islam. The last is the only valid point of contention and one has to see why there is so much angst in both camps against this new Zapatero policy. In a free world, Catholic faithful should be free to protest what hurts their beliefs. The Church is naturally disturbed against a new school curriculum which teaches Catholic kids that most teachings of the Church are wrong. Does not the Church have the right to speak up when Zapatero goes against the religious sentiments of millions? It is a sign of uncontrolled power or humility that when misdirected men hurl abuses at her, the Church remains silent. Does Mr. Grayling have the guts to visit say, Malaysia and scream at Mullah Abdul Aziz who has ruled that women are snatching away the sleeps of men? Where was he when the Taliban were publicly beating women? He was poring over his books preparing to hit at the weak people of this earth. Meanwhile, the Church endures.
