The recent claim by Pakistan to have arrested the spokesman of the Taliban on the Pakistani soil and describe the incident as a big catch seems to a phoney one, The incident spoke volume about Pakistani’s complex relationship with the Taliban. The Washington Post says: “it underscores the conflict between the government’s generally pro-American foreign policy and its reluctance to severe all ties with the Taliban, which it supported until 2001.”

In fact, Pakistan propped up the Taliban at the instance of the US to contain the USSR’s influence in Afghanistan.
