As for now everyone believed Afghanistan to be the ideal Jihad training ground, but now times have changed and Iraq has overtaken Afghanistan. It is now believed that the new generation of Islamist militants in Iraq is more robust and gruesome than their veteran Afghanistan counterparts of the anti-Soviet era.
Iraq has become an exporting ground of such factionist jihadis to otherwise peaceful Middle East countries. They are in touch with each other because Salafi (strict Muslim) ideology is spread all over the entire Arab and Islamic nations. The existence and arrest of Saudi, Jordanian and Yemeni volunteers in the besieged Palestinian refugee camp of Nahr al-Bared in north Lebanon point clearly towards the rapidly increasing jihadi force in Middle East.
Their ideology is to wage a ‘Holy war’ against not just the U.S. or Israel, but also Western-backed Arab regimes. They are ready to sacrifice, be suicide bombs just for the same belief at the point of a finger.
The growing incidents of violence and bloodshed have created dread in the Middle East countries, which were until now considered peaceful. In November 2005, Iraqi suicide bombers backed by Al-Qaeda targeted three luxury hotels in Amman that killed 60 people, including foreigners. Earlier this year in April, Jordan convicted an Iraqi and a Libyan to life imprisonment over an unsuccessful bomb plot against Amman airport in June 2006 on behalf of Al-Qaeda.
As the number of well-trained militants in and out from Iraq continues to surge, so is the fear increasing. These days the stockpiles of arms and explosives, modern day weaponry used by insurgents make Iraq an outstanding training ground.
Even the US Government acknowledges this. Dennis Pluchinsky, a former intelligence expert in the U.S. State Department, dreads that Iraq veterans are the most dangerous for being better trained than their Afghanistan counterparts.
Until now Afghanistan was considered as a Pandora’s box, which when opened created problems in many countries, but the present day Iraq is a much bigger box than Afghanistan.
Terrorism is fast permeating the entire globe. No country is beyond the reach of present day terrorism.
