militants holding ground in pakistan tribal areas
Aftermath the Operation Silence subduing the Red Mosque rebels, militants in Pakistan have become more vociferous in their protest against the Musharraf regime. Pakistan continues to bleed in the ongoing violence in different parts of the country and international disquiet is becoming more and more expressive over resurgence of Al Qaeda in tribal areas adjacent to the Durand line.

On Saturday many terror incidents shook the soil of Pakistan. In North Waziristan pro-Taliban militants killed 22 people, attacked two military posts and a suicide car bomber struck. The escalation of violence after the Red Mosque silence is an indication of the difficult days ahead for Pakistan.

The tribal dominated North Waziristan is regarded as the hot bed of militancy in Pakistan. Their Pasthun affiliation to Taliban and Al Qaeda is very much pronounced and heavy presence of Pakistani terror fugitives flushed out from Afghanistan in the area is a major cause of violent aggrandizement among the tribal population. Their control is so complete that the Pakistan government had to beg to them to save the ceasefire agreement with them after the Red Mosque assault.

security forces targeted by militants

The lack of efforts by the Musharraf regime to control the militants in its tribal areas is the major cause of concern in the western circle. The issue is one of the most debated topics in the US presidential elections. Even most of the presidential candidates favor unilateral US strikes on the tribal areas of Pakistan.

The tribal people of Pakistan are known for their clinching autonomy and anti-establishment views. Their support to the Taliban and Al Qaeda forces is based on the firm footing of arms and financial gain. The treacherous tribal leaders wielding clan powers are very much susceptible to money and guns. Their power and open shelter to fugitive militants is a challenge to Pakistan government, which looks not willing to touch them. This tribal population, once trained by the ISI, the military intelligence of Pakistan to destabilize the political situation in India (1947 & 1965) and Afghanistan (Taliban take over), are now turning their guns on Pakistan and endangering its security.

The escalating violence in Pakistan after the much-hyped Red Mosque operation is an indication of the hold of terrorists over the country. Suicide bombings and continued attacks on security forces there is a warning of Islamic terror forces tearing down the national fabric.
