Sri Lanka, the island country in the Bay of Bengal is on the brink of recurrence of civil war though the 2002 ceasefire, brokered by Norway, is still technically holding, violence in the Tamil-dominated Jaffna peninsula in the north Sri Lanka has risen sharply since a boycott of LTTE secessionists of the November 2005 presidential election, which was won by President Mahinda Rajapaksa — seen as the candidate least likely to cut a deal with the rebels. Even Norway had expressed its displeasure over the boycott of the elections.
The development in Sri Lanka have their ramification in Tamil Nadu province of India where several political groups sustain on their covert and overt support to the LTTE.
