US and German officials believe a terrorist attack against Americans in Germany is imminent, US media reported Friday.

The marshals will provide extra cover on flights between Germany and the US.

Security has been stepped up at US military facilities in Germany, especially the Patch Barracks, the headquarters for US European Command, America’s ABC News reported.

A senior US official told:

The information behind the threat is very real.

German Interior Minister Wolfgang Schauble said:

The danger level is high. We are part of the global threat by Islamist terrorism.

US and German law enforcement officials told that suspected terrorists had conducted surveillance of Patch Barracks.

The 9/11 hijackers planned their operation out of Hamburg, and the country continues to be known as a staging area for al Qaeda and groups affiliated with it. Officials said that up to 500 people belonged to al Qaeda cells in Germany.

Germany is to host a meeting of leaders of the Group of Eight most industrialized nations in the Baltic Sea resort of Heiligendamm June 6 to June 8. Security measures in the country are being increased due to June’s G8 summit.
