Despite, China and India, the two most populous countries in the world, witnessing considerable economic growth in the post liberalisation era, the gap between rich and poor remains wide, as per a latest United Nations report. And almost all the experts agree that the terrorism is the by-product of this widening gulf between poor and rich.

To reduce the growing inequalities, the report called for efforts to ensure that all people benefit from an increasingly open global economy, to promote democracy and include the marginalised, to expand employment opportunities especially for youth, and to improve social protection programmes. Reducing inequalities is also crucial in preventing conflicts and violence, the report added.

Despite unprecedented economic growth especially in Asia, 20 per cent of the world’s population controls 80 per cent of global wealth, and inequalities in income and opportunity persist and in many cases are getting worse, says the report.

The ‘Report on the World Social Situation 2005: The Inequality Predictament’ is the latest in a series that was launched in 1952 to identify emerging social trends of international concern.
